Well with the current media blitz from Microsoft you might be asking what is Ubuntu? You know what Linux is "Its that hippy operating system" that everyone keeps saying will never amount to anything. The problem is that is not the case. Linux for several years has had a growing foothold in the hard core business community if for no other reason than it comes out quick. It adapts to the times. And it literally has an army of people working on it and tweaking it constantly to look for flaws and fix them before they get exploited or at least have a quick fix as soon as a flaw gets to that point. I recently took the plunge and installed my first linux distro in a long time. Back several years ago when Redhat and SUSE were just starting to gain momentum out there in the world I got ahold of a couple of different Linux versions put it on a test machine and though the look was polished and functional. I have to admit that neglected to pursue trying to use it out of pure lazyness. Well no more I say. I have downloaded and installed on one of my newer machines Ubuntu version 7.04 Feisty Fawn. I am not really sure who thinks up these strange code names but they are definitely different. I must tell you after recently installing Vista 64 bit RC 1 on a machine and later installing the full blown Vista on my laptop which took 3 hours. Installing Ubuntu was relatively painless and fast. The nice thing about when you download the .iso image and put it on a cd for Ubuntu is that you can boot up your computer and try it out on a quick test run and see a couple of things. Like will all of your current hardware work with it. Will you be able to function at least minimally until you learn where every thing is.
This is something that Microsoft should wake up and take notice of if they could do this with Vista and control it in some way so that it is not forever usable off of a DVD or a CD then more folks might be a little more enthusiastic about going out and upgrading. I don't think Bill Gates will ever read this and take it to heart and thats just too bad for him. Vista upgrade I don't think so right now. I am going to go ahead and use Ubuntu and may even see if I can get this Beryl to work on it as seen to the left. It looks pretty snappy when you get it working and I believe it is going to give Vista's Aero a run for its money.
