Cute librarian makes Ubuntu how to movie
Friday, May 11, 2007

In my ongoing expirement with Ubuntu in its various flavors I had been doing some additional research online and come across this really snappy homeade video by jessamyn @ The Calef Library.

See her site HERE. She shows how a couple of donated computers that would typically have just gotten junked can be given a new lease on life. These two computers will now be an additional asset for this library and they are not any money at all to get them up and running.

Tech Video of the week: Inside Google
Tuesday, May 8, 2007

I decided since there is such a glut of video content out there anymore that I am going to try to at least pick out one good clip a week on Wedsdays to feature on my site. This week I have picked a quick little onsite tour and interview of the folks at Google. This certainly makes you stop and think what does my company do for me after watching. These folks are some of the brightest and hardest working around in the tech business. And Google certainly looks to reward them in many ways for this in addition to just providing them with a job.

Do I sound a little envious? I guess I am. I mean not only would it be totally cool to work for a company that doesn't show any signs of slowing down in my lifetime but to be working with that many smart people all in one place would l think be not only challenging but also inspiring. And the perks they talk about would not be too bad either. Enjoy!

Is Vista Ultimate worth the extra money?

Recently I came across one of several posts hitting upon some of the extras Vista Ultimate has for you if you are willing to pay the extra premium price for it. One of those extras is DreamScenes ( or animated desktops). Well certainly there is a lot of buzz on the Web concerning the pros and cons of Vista. This post from O'Reilly Opinion blog. They talk about the quick video clip to the left showcasing some of the recently available DremeScenes available.

While it is definitely "Eyecandy" as they are now calling it everywhere. I have to say I have both Vista Beta RC1 running on a computer and Vista Premium Home Edition running on my laptop. And there is no way that I would pay extra to have in essence the ability to play movies as a background for my computers desktop. Its pretty YES! Productive or necessary No!

I would much rather use the cycles needed to produce this to open a window faster. Or to be able to go from one website to another a fraction of a second quicker. Is this what the public in general is looking for. A more expensive bloated OS that looks pretty and needs to since you are going to be looking at each item that much longer while you wait.

Anyway thanks for listening to my little rant.

Daily Fun Site: Who is Sick?
WHO IS SICK

Well today's fun site use's Google maps in another Twitter sort of way with a little twist. Instead of just for letting people know where you hail from or where you have been in a day. This site will show you if there is any type of sickness being reported in your area. Now currently this site purely relys on folks to submit their information to it. And lets face it if your sick you probably are not going to feel up to typing anything out online.

So here is what I suggest. That we take this clever little service and have folks at the doctors offices across the country and the hospitals feed there information into it and we will start to be able to see an accurate forecast of how the folks around us are feeling and how they are doing physically.

Imagine if you were thinking of going out to see that next Summer blockbuster at the theatre and the area that theatre is in shows alot of folks with coughs etc. You could make an informed decision to go elsewhere and not take a chance in catching that cold or at the minimum having to put up with folks coughing thru out the show.

This scenario might be a little far fetched but I really can see folks harnessing the information out there that is becoming more and more available each day to make informed decisions about even the smallest part of there life because they can. What do you think is this site a silly passing fad or do you think what they are doing has merit and could be of some interest or use to you?

Ubuntu lets you drive it before you buy it Vista should too.

Well with the current media blitz from Microsoft you might be asking what is Ubuntu? You know what Linux is "Its that hippy operating system" that everyone keeps saying will never amount to anything. The problem is that is not the case. Linux for several years has had a growing foothold in the hard core business community if for no other reason than it comes out quick. It adapts to the times. And it literally has an army of people working on it and tweaking it constantly to look for flaws and fix them before they get exploited or at least have a quick fix as soon as a flaw gets to that point.

I recently took the plunge and installed my first linux distro in a long time. Back several years ago when Redhat and SUSE were just starting to gain momentum out there in the world I got ahold of a couple of different Linux versions put it on a test machine and though the look was polished and functional. I have to admit that neglected to pursue trying to use it out of pure lazyness.

Well no more I say. I have downloaded and installed on one of my newer machines Ubuntu version 7.04 Feisty Fawn. I am not really sure who thinks up these strange code names but they are definitely different. I must tell you after recently installing Vista 64 bit RC 1 on a machine and later installing the full blown Vista on my laptop which took 3 hours. Installing Ubuntu was relatively painless and fast. The nice thing about when you download the .iso image and put it on a cd for Ubuntu is that you can boot up your computer and try it out on a quick test run and see a couple of things. Like will all of your current hardware work with it. Will you be able to function at least minimally until you learn where every thing is.

This is something that Microsoft should wake up and take notice of if they could do this with Vista and control it in some way so that it is not forever usable off of a DVD or a CD then more folks might be a little more enthusiastic about going out and upgrading. I don't think Bill Gates will ever read this and take it to heart and thats just too bad for him. Vista upgrade I don't think so right now. I am going to go ahead and use Ubuntu and may even see if I can get this Beryl to work on it as seen to the left. It looks pretty snappy when you get it working and I believe it is going to give Vista's Aero a run for its money.
