Get Windows XP SP3 now
Thursday, January 31, 2008

Officially Microsoft should be releasing the Windows XP SP3 soon. However, if you would rather not wait and get a taste of it early you can do the following:

Here is how you can download SP3 straight from Microsoft. Follow the instructions carefully and you’ll be running Windows XP SP3 in no time.

  • Download this file ( WindowsXPSP3Hack.cmd ). Once you have downloaded the file, login as administrator and run the file by double clicking it. Wait for the Confirmation Message on screen.
  • The Above file adds a few entries to the Windows Registry that makes Microsoft think that you are a part of the Private beta program.
  • Check for new updates on Windows Update. You should now see Windows XP SP3 listed in the available updates.
  • Download and install it. Reboot whenever necessary.

A word of caution that this is for the Release Candidate version of the Service Pack so all the bugs are not even close to being worked out of it yet. When I installed it I ran into problems at startup where if I did not login in right away after booting up an error would occur and I would have to reboot and login in right away. Also I did have some problems with the Firefox version 2.0.0.10 and had to revert to version 2.0.0.8. But overall it worked well except for those two quirks.

Don't do it unless you're willing to reformat. The web is full of people experiencing black screens after rebooting. I am currently looking for a solution and that is how I have found your site. I guess I have no choice but to rebuild. Fredation

I also had to eventually had to reinstall my OS after running the less than complete XP SP3.

But that is something you run into sometimes when you load something that is still a Beta build or a Release Canidate.

They just have not worked all the bugs out. Though I did learn my lesson to some degree. I am trying out Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1. I am trying before I buy so to speak by using a virtual load that MS has offered via Virtual PC 2007 and an image with Windows XP SP2 and IE8 B1 installed. I suppose that you could also use this build to load the SP3 onto and see how it fare with your hardware etc...

Might try that and write about stay tuned.
