Web site of the Day: Use Scrubit! to clean-up your DNS

Want a quick fix for stopping the possibility of someone "Mistakenly" visiting a site on the home computer that is not "PG" rated? This fix is easy to make and once done if a user attempts to go to a site that is a pornographic or malicious web site.

Its fairly easy to make this change to your home or work Network setup. Just follow these steps and of course if you find it to limiting or do not like it you can always return to your default setting for DNS and let it "Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically".

1. From Start Button, go to Network Connections (Network and Sharing in Vista)

2. Select your network (typically Local Area Network) and right click to choose 'Properties'.

3. Select TCP or TCP/IPv4, whichever is listed, and click on 'Properties'.

4. Under 'Use the Following DNS Server Addresses' , specify the ScrubIT DNS servers: 67.138.54.100 as preferred; 207.225.209.66 as alternate.

To go back to your previous setting choose "Obtain DNS server address automatically. This of course does not block out all the bad sites out there but it sure cuts down on a lot of the mainstream ones. For additional information you can also check out Scrubit's site.

Get rid of XP's pesky language bar
Thursday, January 10, 2008

Well I had almost forgotten about this little annoyance until this past weekend when I was finally able to re-build my crashed main computer. Do you remember the first time that you either booted up Windows XP on a store bought computer or after an install of XP that annoying little language bar peeking out on the right side of your task bar by the system tray? Well you could turn it off but every time you rebooted there it was again. Well here is a quick and easy way to get rid of it for good.

  1. Click the Start Button.
  2. Select Control Panel option.
  3. Double-Click the Regional and Language Options icon.
  4. Click on the Languages tab.
  5. Click the Details button.
  6. Click the Language Bar button.
  7. Remove the checkmark from the Show Language Bar option.
  8. Click OK.
  9. That's it your done enjoy.
